Do you want to drive high quality search traffic to your website?
When it comes to search engine marketing, all begins with the keywords typed in the search box. Search engines aren’t only the source of most targeted traffic to your website but the using the long tail keywords effectively in your content can increase the monthly traffic to your site.
Keyword research is the primary factor that determines the kind of audience you will get on your site. Ranking for a keyword can make or break your site.
Your long tail keywords may not rank for top 10 results in the search engine as 60% of the traffic goes to top 3 results according to HubSpot Search Engine Optimization Statistics but that leaves 40% still up for grabs.
You can easily receive those extra clicks by implementing the long tail keywords in your content most effectively.
If you will craft the content consistently around long tail keywords then you will notice an increase in search traffic to your website, most targeted audience that grows your brand.
Now you know the potential of long tail keywords on your brand growth so let’s dive in-depth about long tail keywords to drive organic traffic to your website.
In this article, I’ll cover up these three topics:
- Why long tail keywords are important
- How to find long tail keywords
- Paid tools to find most profitable long tail keywords
1. Why long tail keywords are important
Many people think that keyword research is no longer important in today’s SEO but honestly, that’s not true. Keyword research has important in your business as it defines your audience. Particularly, long tail keywords – get the most inspired and engaging audience.
In some market, it’s really hard to rank. But if you have a clear mission then you should define what makes your website or product out from this market.
It’s much easier to rank for long tail keywords than commonly used head terms. Although, they have less search traffic but receive highly targeted audience that is close to taking action.
Let’s say a user is searching for “life jacket” – he may be looking for some research project on the life jacket, or he may be looking for some information about life jacket, or he may be looking to purchase life jacket. Who knows?
In short, targeting the short keywords can’t clear the intent of the user.
On the other hand, if a user is searching for “best life jacket for dogs” or “best life jacket for sailing” then the intent of the user is so clear.
it’s better to rank for long tail keywords even they have the low amount of searches but you will notice higher conversions rate than targeting the head terms.
It never means that targeting the short tail keywords don’t convert but the conversion potential of short tail keywords are always less than long-tail keywords.
One question that most of the people ask is: “what should be the length of long tail keywords?” And mostly experts answer that “3+, 4, 5,… words”.
I totally disagree with it.
Well, It’s not the length that helps in ranking but we can say that longer the keyword will be higher will be targeting or focus.
Key elements that truly make a keyword long-tail are:
- Search Volume
More specific the search phrase, easier to rank in search engine. It’s just because fewer people have already written on that specific phrase so ultimately the competition will be low.
In fact, some long-tail keywords have zero existing search volume because sometime users don’t enter the Google suggested search phrase and use their own.
To find the best long-tail keywords your research should base on search volume and specificity.
Here is how to do that…
2. Effective way to research long-tail keywords
Finding the long-tail keyword is important but to find a keyword with high focus and easier to rank requires extra approach and efforts.
Google Keyword Planner
Let’s start with Google Keywords Planner…
Just follow these simple steps:
Step 1: Start with a seed keyword. Let’s assume that you want to target a keyword “Online marketing”. To find the long tail variations around this keyword, just head over to Google Keyword Planner and enter the seed keyword in search box and click on “Get ideas.”
Step #2: By clicking on “Keyword ideas” you will be provided with related keywords to your seed keyword. Make sure you select the closely related keywords because you have to expand them further.
Step #3: Select the closely related terms such as above highlighted red and enter the search box to get long-tail variations.
Google Searches Related To
Have you ever noticed when you scroll down at the bottom of Google’s search results then there is a section of related terms that you enter in search box called as, “Searches related to…”
It looks like that:
Well, this area can also give you some highly related long tail keywords because these terms are closely related to the keyword you used the search box.
Here is how to do that:
Step #1: Enter your search term in Google’s search box and hit enter.
Step #2: Scroll down to the bottom of Google’s search results, usually you will see some related search terms around your main keyword.
Actually, these related long-tail keywords are gold mines as they are closely related to your main keyword and you may not find them in Google Keyword Planner.
For further specification of the long tail keyword, you can select any long tail keyword from search related to section and put it in Google search box.
Usually, these long-tail variations are highly focused and easier to rank in search. So, never miss this gem while searching for highly relevant long-tail variation. Repeat the steps until you don’t find the best variation of the long tail keyword.
One of the best ways to brainstorm great ideas in your mind is mining well-known forums in your industry.
You will see that large number of the people asking different questions around your topic. There is similar kind of audience who ask the same questions on Google.
To find the long tail keywords around those topics, just do few simple steps.
First, head over to any popular forum in your industry. You may know a few of them but if you don’t know then play with some search query in Google search box.
Here are some search queries that you can use to find the forums in your industry:
- “Keyword”+ “forum”
- “Keyword” + “powered by vbulletin”
- “Keyword” + discussions
Let’s say you want to find the keywords about “knitting” then your search query should be like that:
Just enter any forum given in search result then look for some questions that people are asking about your topic.
Within a matter of few steps, I could be able to find 4 different keywords related to the topic “Knitting” that people might search for in Google.
- “Where can I buy chunky white cotton?”
- “how did you learn to knit?”
- “Thanksgiving knitting patterns”
- DIY knitting pattern on Pinterest”
Quora is a well-known Q/A site on the internet just similar to Yahoo! Answers. People ask different questions related to their topic and get the answer by people of the same industry. You can use Quora to collect long tail keywords to create the content around it.
Just you need to do some simple and easy steps:
Step #1: Go to the Quora and create your account.
Step #2: Once you are done creating your account then type any broad keyword in the search bar.
Quora will provide the most popular questions related to your topic:
Some questions in Quora are already high volume keywords themselves but you can still use other low volume search keywords as subheadings so that it will make your content more appealing.
While mining the keywords on Quora I found a keyword that seems to have a high volume of searches “What are best knitting cable pattern” which is a long tail keyword.
So, while searching on Google Keyword Planner, I used the short-tail version “Knit cable pattern” of the question and I found of list of keywords, have high volume of searches.
Quora not only gives the best idea of long tail keywords but also give you some extra approach to brainstorm your mind to write more appealing content.
I hope, you will find some high quality keywords by taping these strategies.
When you type a keyword in Google search, Google provides you the suggestion related to your seed keyword, Ubersuggest grabs Google suggestion and provide a high volume of keywords.
For example, if you will type a seed keyword such as “weight loss” then Google search will give you a list of suggested keywords like this:
When you type an alphabet after your seed keyword then Google search will provide you another list of suggestions like this:
UberSuggest scraps all the data from Google suggestion so that you don’t need to manually add the alphabets after seed keywords as this tool does this job more accurately.
Here is how to do that:
Go to Ubersuggest and type your seed keyword in the search box and press “suggest”.
This tool will provide you the Google suggested keywords, in the first portion you will be provided with highly related keywords randomly.
Then you will see the list of keywords divided alphabetically “seed keyword + alphabet”
In that way, you can find the keywords that people search in Google within a matter of few easy steps. Some keywords may not make sense for your site but some will.

Since our topic is to find the long tail keywords so I’m not covering up other features.
Keyword research is so important to get the targeted audience to your website and only the long tail keywords can give you the right intent of visitor.
Always keep in mind that your main goal is to provide the helpful content but not to manipulate the search engine.
I always implement long tail keywords in all of my blog posts and other kinds of content. This keyword strategy always works for me.
Don’t worry if a keyword has a low number of searches, the search engine will give you the traffic from different related keywords.
Before selection of the keyword, make sure you know the intent behind the keyword whether it’s information or commercial.
Free tools can give you the bunch of keywords but you can’t estimate which one you should choose to rank in the search engine as you don’t know the competition metrics.
By using the paid tools you can find the right choice of keywords by analyzing the competition. This can take your business to the next level to get more conversions.
My personal suggestion to find the right keyword:
- Keyword Length: It should be at least 4 words or more (just to increase the focus of keyword.)
- Competition: Always choose the keywords that have low or moderate competition.
- Search Volume: Select the keyword that has at least 70 monthly searches but you will also get traffic from related keywords.
Are you using long tail keywords to drive traffic to your website?
